On June 3, 2022, with the signing of a new gun law HB2075 (Act 030), effective immediately, the HPD Firearms Unit requires physical inspections for the following firearms: #1 firearms and firearm receivers that are assembled without serial numbers or other identification markings.

Firearm Services. According to Chapter 134 of the Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes, “Firearms, Ammunition and Dangerous Weapons,” all firearms in Hawaiʻi must be registered whether or not they are serviceable and no matter how they are acquired. The following exceptions apply:
Any person attempting to register a firearm, a firearm receiver, or the parts used to assemble a firearm, and who is found to be disqualified from ownership, possession, or control of firearms or ammunition under section 134-7, shall surrender or dispose of all firearms and ammunition pursuant to section 134-7.3.
Longarms accounted for 54.6% (28,279) of all firearms registered during 2022 (51,833). Broken out further, rifles and shotguns comprised 44.3% (22,939) and 10.3% (5,340) of total registrations, respectively. The remaining 45.5% (23,604) of firearms registered throughout 2022 were handguns.
