The natural history of Fish Island Preserve is strongly tied to its cultural history, both pre-historic and historic. Most of the island is a cultural midden with its origins at least 4,000 years before present. The midden is located on the historically highest elevations on the island.
Fish Island Preserve, located at the west end of Plantation Island Drive South (see map), is a park with trails, beautiful views and a rich cultural history. The preserve is open from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week.

Fish Island now represents some of the last undeveloped waterfront property in the city of St. Augustine. The area comprises uplands, which support a maritime forest and a bald eagle nest, and wetland areas, which support an extensive marsh habitat located on the Matanzas River.
