The Scriptures take us through the Liturgical Year on a three year cycle. The Church designates readings to be used for each day on a three year cycle. We have Liturgical Years A, B and C. We look at Jesus and our own lives through the Gospel of Matthew (Cycle A), Mark (Cycle B) and Luke (Cycle C).
The Liturgical Year is marked by special seasons— We begin our Liturgical Year with the season-cycle of Advent-Christmas. Then there is a brief period of Ordinary Time (“Ordinary” comes from “ordinal;” these are the numbered Sundays of the year outside of the seasons).
The Liturgical Seasons Advent: Advent is the be-ginning of the liturgical year and lasts between three and four weeks. It is a sea-son filled with tremendous hope and anticipation as we await expectantly the Sec-ond Coming of the Lord. Major Seasons of the Western Christian Liturgical Year. Season of ADVENT. Time of watchful/joyful preparation for the Lord’s Coming, “first coming” (Christmas) and “second coming” (Parousia). Begins four Sundays before Christmas (Nov. 27 to Dec. 3); thus 3-4 weeks long, only rarely four full weeks.

The first part of "Ordinary Time" begins after the Christmas season (the day after the Baptism of the Lord) and runs up until Lent (which begins on Ash Wednesday).

The seven seasons of the Christian calendar. Early in its history, the Church divided the year into liturgical seasons based on the life and ministry of Jesus. In short they are: Advent, starting four weeks before Christmas, tells of the coming (or advent) of Jesus. It begins with the first Sunday in December.
