20 Απρ 2018 · Johns’ first use of the flag motif was the result of a dream the artist had in 1954 when he was 24 years old. Flag was exhibited in Johns’ first one-man show at Leo Castelli’s gallery in 1958 and is now located at MoMA in New York.
10 Οκτ 2024 · Jasper Johns, American painter and graphic artist who is generally associated with the Pop art movement. Johns’s paintings often depict commonplace two-dimensional subjects such as flags, targets, maps, numbers, and letters of the alphabet, all readily recognizable and painted in simple colors.
As a precursor to Pop Art of the 1960s, Johns was one of the first artists to make art based on common everyday objects. By representing a flag, Johns eliminated the artist’s subjective role to choose color and forms to express an idea, and thus forces us to reconsider these things traditionally valued in art.

This painting was preceded by a red, white, and blue version, Flag (1954–55; Museum of Modern Art, New York), and followed by numerous drawings and prints of flags in various mediums, including the elegant oil on paper Flag (1957; 1999.425).
We’re not looking at a printed American flag, and we’re not looking at a flag of cloth. In fact, some critics at the time asked, “Is this a painting, or is this a flag?” In other words, is it a representation, or is it an actual flag?
