26 Φεβ 2024 · Sharp and flat describe a change in pitch; they make notes go higher or lower. To "sharp" (♯) a note means raising it's pitch. This means that a G♯ is higher than a G. In fact, G♯ is a ½-step higher than G. To "flat" (♭) a note means lowering its pitch. A flat (♭) note will be a ½-step lower.

Flat. Also known as a soft B or a bemolle, the flat note lowers a natural note by half a step. In music notation, a flat note lowers the pitch of a note by a semitone and is denoted by a stylized lowercase ‘b’. For example, a flat note placed before a natural B note makes it a B flat represented by B♭.
30 Δεκ 2015 · A key signature defines the key of the music and thus what flats or sharps are supposed to be played throughout the piece. This helps reduce the need for accidentals (i.e. placing a flat or sharp before a note in the music every time it occurs).
The Golden Rule. Sharps (#) raise the note by a semitone, whilst flats (b) lower the note by a semitone. Normally this will move a note from a black to a white note (or vice versa). However, in some cases you will notice that if a movement of a semitone is between 2 white notes (e.g. E-F and B-C).
