This protocol is intended to guide clinicians and patients through the post-operative course after a total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and hemiarthroplasty. Specific interventions should be based on the needs of the individual and should consider exam findings and clinical decision making. If you have questions, contact the referring physician.

Week 0 to 4 • Pendulum exercises with arm fully supported in a forward position – “cradling the baby”. • Passive/active assisted flexion either in lying, sitting or standing as pain allows. • Passive/active assisted external rotation in lying/sitting with a stick. • Scar massage • Sling for 4 weeks
Active ROM in elbow flexion and extension with the elbow at the side and humerus in neutral rotation. Forearm pronation and supination, finger and wrist ROM. Scapular retractions and trapezial stretch. May progress to table slides at 4 wks. May begin gentle PROM if indicated on therapy prescription. Restrictions. No active ROM of the shoulder.
Regular exercises to restore motion and flexibility to your shoulder and a gradual return to your everyday activities are important for your full recovery after shoulder surgery. Your orthopaedic surgeon and physical therapist may recommend that you exercise for 10 to 15 minutes, 2 or 3 times a day during your early recovery period.
18 Οκτ 2017 · PROM requires the therapist to put the arm through a comfortable range of motion while the patient is supine. Motions include flexion, abduction and external rotation. Hand, wrist, and elbow motion should be done as needed. PROM, pendulum, and scapular retraction should be done at each therapy visit.
