The FWC's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute developed the Seagrass Integrated Mapping and Monitoring (SIMM) Program to protect and manage seagrasses in Florida by providing a collaborative resource for seagrass mapping, monitoring, and data sharing.

Based on the recent mapping data available for Florida, majority of these seagrass beds are located in southern Florida (1,300,000 acres) or in the Big Bend and Springs Coast region (618,000 acres).

26 Ιουλ 2004 · The distribution of seagrasses in Florida’s coastal waters (Fig. 2) are affected by a number of environmental factors, including water temperature, water clarity, salinity, tidal current velocities, wave energy, and the physical and chemical characteristics of sediments.
Seagrass beds are highly productive areas and provide critical habitat for many species of invertebrates and fishes. Seagrass beds are important elements in the lagoon's detrital food webs, and constitute important links in the mineral and nutrient cycles of the Indian River.
