Το ραδιόφωνο με υπο-φέρον (subcarrier) αποτελεί εξειδικευμένη χρήση της τεχνολογίας των ραδιοκυμάτων διαμόρφωσης κατά συχνότητα (FM), κυρίως στις ΗΠΑ, όπου με ειδικούς δέκτες είναι δυνατή η λήψη περισσότερων του ενός σταθμών στην ίδια συχνότητα.
Το ραδιόφωνο στην Ελλάδα εμφανίστηκε στη δεκαετία του 1920 με πειραματικές προσπάθειες μικρής κλίμακας από ιδιώτες και δημόσιους φορείς. Ο επίσημος φορέας συστήθηκε το 1938 και χρησιμοποιήθηκε για την προπαγάνδα του μεταξικού καθεστώτος.
