Scrimmage downs. The majority of a football game takes place on plays, or downs, that begin at the line of scrimmage. The officials spot the ball (place it in a designated spot on the field) on the line of scrimmage and declare it ready for play.

What are Downs in Football? A "down" in football is essentially an individual play. Each time the offense takes possession, they get a set of downs. The offense is given four downs to advance the ball 10 yards forward.
Downs are the most fundamental part of NFL play. The offensive team moves the ball forward in sections of at least 10 yards. They have four chances (or downs) to gain those 10 yards.
