9 Δεκ 2003 · If I were getting a new unit today, for starters, it would be a Foredom 1/6 HP SR with a 44 handpiece and collet set and SCT foot control, plus a Pfingst 330 handpiece. Foredom and Pfingst are both very old American companies, who also make dental equipment. Both are top quality.
Foredom flex shaft tools are better than Dremels. The motor isn't in your hand, so it's less fatiguing to use. The quick-change handpieces are handy, but they're more fragile; the Jacobs chuck style is more durable and take any size tool, but they're less concentric.

8 Ιαν 2008 · I have both and find both do a good job. The one cited above is 1/8th inch chuck and the foredom handles 1/4 ich shank tools. Smokey Mountain Woodcarvers had a Foredom kit 5240 for $250 with the 44T handpiece that fits the legacy mill recently and I added to the tool collection.
The Foredom is a good tool but you may need to supplement it with a micro motor for precision carving. If you want to buy one tool that will do more, I recommend the Mastercarver flexshaft. The Foredom tops out at 18,000 RPM while the Mastercarver tops out at 30,000 RPM.
I've read good things about the $70 Foredom SR Chinese knockoff on eBay, it has pretty good reviews. While I have a Foredom LX for stone setting specifically, the Chinese copy would be a huge upgrade from a Dremel, night and day.
