Surveys indicate that most pediatric dentists use formocresol pulpotomy despite concerns about the subsequent systemic distribution of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde has been demonstrated to cause immune sensitization, mutation and cancer in animals and has been classified as a human carcinogen.
Concern has been expressed about the safety of formocresol use in pediatric dentistry. Formaldehyde, a primary component in formocresol, is a hazardous substance and is considered a probable human carcinogen by Health Canada.
