Formocresol was introduced to treat non-vital permanent teeth in the United States by Buckley in 1904. In 1930, Sweet introduced the formocresol pulpotomy technique. Formocresol has subsequently become a popular pulpotomy medicament for primary teeth. Initially, the technique involved five visits.
Following coronal pulp amputation and once hemostasis has been achieved, one-fifth dilution formocresol solution (Box 23-5) on a cotton pellet is blotted to remove excess formocresol and then placed in direct contact with the pulp stumps for 5 minutes. Formocresol is caustic and creates a severe tissue burn if allowed to touch the gingiva.
Recall the patient after a minimum of 48 hours and remove the pellet. Complete the endodontic treatment and restore. Formocresol pulpotomy in primary teeth: Isolate the tooth with a rubber dam.
