Surveys indicate that most pediatric dentists use formocresol pulpotomy despite concerns about the subsequent systemic distribution of formaldehyde. Formaldehyde has been demonstrated to cause immune sensitization, mutation and cancer in animals and has been classified as a human carcinogen.
The suggestion has been made recently that formocresol use in pediatric dentistry is unwarranted because of safety concerns, and consequently, formocresol use in pediatric pulp therapy is obsolete. As a result, numerous investigations for alternatives to formocresol, some of which have shown efficacy equivalent to formocresol, have been completed.
13 Μαρ 2023 · While the use of formocresol around the world continues to drop, it still is utilized in alarmingly high rates, an age-old bias that is unsubstantiated by overall academic research. Formaldehyde remains a genotoxic and carcinogenic problem worldwide.
3 Μαΐ 2023 · The current paper aimed to review the properties of formocresol and concerns regarding its safety as a pulpotomy medicament for primary teeth.
The formocresol procedure had appeal because there was a lower risk of pulp calcification, a recognized complication of Ca(OH) 2 pulpotomy. After root completion, the tooth could easily be reentered, the pulp extirpated, and routine endodontic therapy performed.
