Formacresol is a mixture consisting of formalin, cresol and glycerine used in dentistry. [1] It is used for vital pulpotomy of primary teeth and as a temporary intracanal medicament during root canal therapy. Buckley's solution is a 20% form of formocresol, diluted with glycerine and distilled water. [2]
A commercial solution containing 19% formaldehyde, 35% cresol in a glycerine/water vehicle (Buckley's formocresol, Cosby laboratories, Burbank, CA, USA), was later developed as a suitable medicament for the treatment of pulpally exposed primary teeth.
Formocresol has been used in dentistry for over 100 years, and for vital pulpotomy in primary teeth for over 80 years. Its efficacy has been extensively studied, with clinical success rates ranging from 70% to 100%, making it the standard against which newer techniques are compared.

Formocresol has been used in dentistry since 100 years. The biologic approach to pediatric pulp therapy is either devitalization approach of formocresol pulptomy or pulpectomy. Formocresol was introduced to treat non-vital permanent teeth in the United States by Buckley in 1904. In 1930, Sweet introduced the formocresol pulpotomy
Buckley introduced formocresol in 1904, which is the most commonly used medicament for pulpotomy. The success rate of formocresol pulpotomy ranged from 70 to 98%. 6 Histological findings observed with the use of formocresol ranged from slight inflammation to total degeneration and necrotic changes.
Formocresol has been a widely used medicament in the treatment of cariously exposed vital primar)^ mo-lars. The first report of the use of a formaldehyde containing pulp medicament was in 1874 when Nitzel used a tricresol - formalin tanning agent (1).
