In a restricted sense, the name refers to the 10 or so species classified as ‘true’ foxes (genus Vulpes), especially the red, or common, fox (V. vulpes).
Foxes are small-to-medium-sized omnivorous mammals belonging to several genera of the family Canidae. They have a flattened skull; upright, triangular ears; a pointed, slightly upturned snout; and a long, bushy tail ("brush"). Twelve species belong to the monophyletic "true fox" group of genus Vulpes.
Vulpes is a genus of the sub-family Caninae. The members of this genus are colloquially referred to as true foxes, meaning they form a proper clade. The word "fox" occurs in the common names of all species of the genus, but also appears in the common names of other canid species.
Many foxes are monogamous, meaning a male and a female become a mating pair for either life or a mating season (Mammal Group, 2014). Females have also been seen with several males in pursuit, as well as social living groups with numbers of around ten (Baker et al. 2004).

Red fox males and females, and sometimes their older offspring, cooperate to care for the pups. Young remain in the den for 4 to 5 weeks, where they are cared for and nursed by their mother. They are nursed for 56 to 70 days and are provided with solid food by their parents and older siblings.
