At the time the 1st Marine Division was arrayed around and between a few villages along the mountainous upper reaches of the narrow road that wound from Hungnam to the 10-mile-long Chosin Reservoir. During its movement north earlier in November, the division had maintained a slow, methodical pace.
That night, as temperatures plunged well below zero in the rugged mountains of North Korea, three Chinese divisions sounded horns, whistles, and bugles and attacked the 5th and 7th Marine regiments at the reservoir.

At Toktong Pass, Fox Company of the 7th Marines held out for five days against multiple pockets of 50 to 100 Chinese soldiers who attacked them continuously. Aided by artillery and airstrikes, the assault by the Chinese was halted.
The temperature was minus 30 degrees F, so by 9 pm all but the regular watchkeepers were snuggled in their soft down sleeping bags, shoeless and exhausted by the day’s prodigious physical exertions and the sub-zero cold. Yudam-ni was seen by all higher headquarters as a temporary staging area.
Some were able to catch a ride on a truck, but most walked carrying a sixty-pound pack for a seven-mile journey in bitterly cold temperatures of at least ten degrees below zero, falling snow, and winds whipping off the nearby Chosin Reservoir.
23 Ιουν 2022 · Fox Company, led by Captain William Barber, managed to hold the critical hill above Toktong pass and the vital road below for five days. Despite a severe wound to his leg, Barber kept moving amongst his men’s foxholes, keeping them focused.
