1. Of Studies. Francis Bacon (1561-1626) was an English statesman, writer, philosopher and an early promoter of what we have come to call the scientific method. In 1597 he published the first edition of his “essays.” He borrowed the word essay from the French writer Michel de Montaigne.

This article is an investigation into the rationale and the structure of order of Francis Bacon's natural and experimental histories. My aim is to show that these natural histories are mainly composed of experimental series, ie methodologically organized recordings of experimental inquiries.
In this essay Bacon describes the importance of studies in human life. Bacon begins the essay by enlisting three purposes of studies – “to delight, for ornament and for ability.”. Studies delight most when one is secluded and reposed. Knowledge acquired through studies serve as ornament in a conversation.
