7 Δεκ 2003 · This deciduous tree has 6-inch leaves with 3–7 leaflets that are furry underneath. It also has velvety branchlets. Ridges on the gray-brown bark seem to interlace on mature trees. There may be specimens of the wild species on campus, but the cultivar ‘Modesto’ has been widely used.
This evergreen to semi-evergreen tree is both upright and narrow when young, but assumes a spreading form when older. Since it is shallow rooted, deep waterings are essential for deeper rootings. When the tree is young, any long, unsightly branches should be cut back.
