In 1956, The ‘Fryske Academy’ did extensive research on the origin of the Frisian flag (Fryske Akademy, 1956, in Echtefriesevlag.nl, n.d.) and they found the first reference to the flag just after the year 1085. This reference relates to the legend of the brothers Friso, Saxo and Bruno.
