Frye Island is an island town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. Located in Sebago Lake, the island is accessed via a public car ferry from Raymond Neck, or by private boat. All residents of the resort town are seasonal.
The Frye Island Historical Society has a collection of maps, town documents, photographs, pamphlets and other publications. The photo collection demonstrates the history of the island as a sheep farm, a boy’s camp, a summer retreat and finally as the newest town in Maine.
The largest island in Sebago Lake is Frye Island. It was once extensively farmed. One story has it that a wild woman lived there and stole food and milk from the farms. Although an extensive search of the island was made, it was unsuccessful except that she was not seen or fed afterwards.
