The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved furosemide to treat conditions with volume overload and edema secondary to congestive heart failure exacerbation, liver failure, or renal failure, including the nephrotic syndrome.
Furosemide has a steep dose-effect curve, and therapeutic doses range from 40 to 200 mg daily in adults (Weiner & Mudge, 1985). Treatment of oedema is usually started with an initial oral dose of 40 mg daily; in severe cases, a gradual increase up to 600 mg daily may be required.
