Ireland’s electricity industry had been in operation for more than 40 years before the first nationwide electricity market was established in 1927. Starting small and primarily based around Dublin, local authorities and private companies generated and supplied electricity.
The electricity meter was usually installed inside the front door, and watched carefully to control the size of the bill. The ESB provided the meter and fuse board, but any internal wiring was the responsibility of the home owner.
