Growth deformities known as galls commonly occur on oak trees in Texas. Most oak trees are attacked by a group of small insects called gall makers. These insects can cause deformities, called galls, in the leaves, twigs, bark, buds, flowers, nuts, or roots of the tree.

Oak galls are abnormal plant growths found on foliage and twigs that are produced by small oak gall wasps. Shapes of galls vary from spherical to urn-shaped to star-shaped to fuzzy. Pruning twigs that host oak galls is a simple and effective way to help stop the cycle.
29 Μαρ 2024 · Texas Oak wilt (also called oak decline) is caused by a fungus. On red oaks, one of its main symptoms is discoloration of the leaves which starts at the outside edges and progresses inward. On live oaks, the veins of the leaves die first, becoming yellow or brown.
Texas gardeners are probably most familiar with the galls that appear on their oak trees. On live oaks, it is usually Mealy Oak Galls — those tan, jawbreaker-sized orbs that persist on the outer twigs long after the acorns drop.
20 Ιουλ 2012 · I say rarely, because I remember a situation about 8 years ago when we actually found a gall made by an insect on the main trunk of a young Texas live oak. That gall actually girdled the trunk, disrupted the vascular system and eventually killed the tree. It was a small young tree ~1 inch caliper.
The mealy-oak gall is one of the most common galls on live oak in Texas (figure 1). The gall is induced by a small wasp, Disholcaspis cinerosa (figure 2). Gall-infested live oak trees occur throughout Texas in natural and planted situations.
