Genesis 23 (2011) The story of Abraham is drawing to a close in Genesis. We still have a couple of chapters before we note Abraham’s death. But Moses is preparing us even now to move to the next patriarch, Isaac. And it’s worth noting that the occasion for this transition was Abraham’s success on the mountain.
1. (Genesis 23:3-9) Abraham speaks with the sons of Heth. Then Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, “I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
Genesis chapter 23 records Sarah’s death and Abraham’s investment in her eternal inheritance with a cave in the city of Hebron. From this chapter, God reveals seven lessons about placing your hope and your investments in your eternal inheritance in heaven.
Genesis 23. Sarah died when one hundred twenty-seven years old. The Pulpit Commentary points out that she is the only woman in the Bible whose age at death is mentioned. The KJV renders the Hebrew repetition which the NIV omits, by saying: "And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah."
