God accepts Abel's offering but not Cain's, making Cain angry. Cain then lures Abel into a field and kills him. When God questions Cain about Abel's whereabouts, Cain denies knowing. God punishes Cain by cursing the ground and making him a fugitive. God places a mark on Cain to protect him from being killed by others.
And the Lord put a mark on Cain, so that no one who came upon him would kill him. 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod,[d] east of Eden.
