The German Shepherd, [a] also known in Britain as an Alsatian, is a German breed of working dog of medium to large size. The breed was developed by Max von Stephanitz using various traditional German herding dogs from 1899.

German Shepherd History. The ancestors of German Shepherds were bred in late 19th century Germany as working dogs, specifically as sheepdogs and guard dogs on farms. In 1899, after much disagreement about which qualities to highlight in the breed, Max von Stephanitz declared the first German Shepherd dog, which he named Horand von Grafrath.

Worldwide interest in the breed began rising in the early 1900s and the German shepherd was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1908.
