Between 1941 and 1945, the Nazis established five killing centers in German-occupied Poland —Chelmno, Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, and Auschwitz-Birkenau (part of the Auschwitz camp complex). Chelmno and Auschwitz were established in areas annexed to Germany in 1939.
The German camps in occupied Poland during World War II were built by the Nazis between 1939 and 1945 throughout the territory of the Polish Republic, both in the areas annexed in 1939, and in the General Government formed by Nazi Germany in the central part of the country (see map).
This original map surveys the extent of Nazi German control in 1942, as well as the location of approximately 2,000 select ghettos and concentration camps during World War II. The map uses contemporary borders in Europe and North Africa to better communicate the breadth of Nazi-controlled territory during the war.
