Despite appearing somewhat archaic alongside the more famous monoplanes of the Luftwaffe, the Hs 123 was a firm favourite with its pilots.
Following the end of the First World War, Germany was forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles from developing any major weapon systems, including tanks and aircraft. During the 1920s German aircraft manufacturers began designing civilian aircraft that could easily be modified and used as military aircraft, in order to circumvent this.
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was matched only by the Supermarine Spitfire. It was the Luftwaffe’s only single seat fighter for the first few years of the Second World War and the RAF’s nemesis during the Battle of Britain. Duxford’s Bf 109 is an E-3/E-4 variant.
