What used to be called the gerund is an -ing form used as a noun or noun phrase, while the present participle is an -ing form used as a verb. While and before can each be used in different ways. For example, before can be a preposition and it can be a conjunction.

Examples of Gerunds. Like all nouns, a gerund can function in one of four ways. Here is an example of each way using the gerund "visiting": (1) The Subject of a Verb. The -ing form is used in past, present and future continuous tenses, for example: Anthony was fishing. The boys have been playing tennis. We will be working when you arrive. -ing Form as Subject, Object or Complement. We can use the -in g form as the subject, object or complement of a clause, for example: Smoking costs a lot of money.

31 Δεκ 2013 · Grammar. A gerund is formed by adding ‘ing’ to the end of a verb. This form is like a noun. I like listening to music. Watching TV is not always good for you. Doing exercise is important. I spent the whole morning studying. My hobby is playing the guitar. They enjoy partying. In each of the sentences above the –ing form is a noun not a verb.
