History. W&A Gilbey was founded in 1857 as a gin distillery by Sir Walter Gilbey, but by 1962 had a diversified family share holding, chaired by former figure skater and politician, Ronald Gilbey. [1]
Gilbey’s Gin recipe dates to the 1870s, when the Gilbey brothers, two veterans of the Crimean war, whose successful wine/spirits merchant business had thrived throughout the second half of the 19th century, expanded their business to include the eponymous gin (called Gilbey’s since 1895).
In 1997 W&A Gilbey was included in Grand Metropolitan’s merger with Guinness PLC to form Diageo PLC. Originally a wine and spirits merchant founded by two brothers, W&A Gilbey grew into a blending and distilling operation perhaps most famous today for its London dry gin.
