Gilbey’s Gin recipe dates to the 1870s, when the Gilbey brothers, two veterans of the Crimean war, whose successful wine/spirits merchant business had thrived throughout the second half of the 19th century, expanded their business to include the eponymous gin (called Gilbey’s since 1895).

Producers of Gilbey's Gin. 1856 Walter Gilbey and Alfred Gilbey returned to London after the Crimean war and on the advice of their eldest brother, Henry Parry Gilbey, a wholesale wine-merchant, started in the retail wine and spirit trade, importing South African wines.
In 1857 Walter and Alfred Gilbey returned from service in the Crimean War and set up a wine importing business in London’s Soho. Trade grew so strongly that by 1867 they were installed in the famous Pantheon building on Oxford Street – five years later they set up a gin distillery in Camden Town.
