Learn about the 36 regions on Earth that are both biologically rich and deeply threatened, and how Conservation International works to protect them. Find out why biodiversity hotspots matter for human survival and well-being, and explore the map and data of these irreplaceable places.
Biodiversity hotspots host their diverse ecosystems on just 2.4% of the planet's surface. [2] Ten hotspots were originally identified by Myer; [1] the current 36 used to cover more than 15.7% of all the land but have lost around 85% of their area. [8]
1 Ιαν 2011 · Biodiversity hotspots are regions with high levels of biodiversity and high threats of loss. This chapter reviews the development, analysis, and conservation of the 35 hotspots, and their importance for human well-being and ecosystem services.
24 Φεβ 2000 · The 25 hotspots feature several habitat types at global scale. Predominant are tropical forests, appearing in 15 hotspots, and Mediterranean-type zones, in five.
5 Σεπ 2023 · Conservationists have identified 36 ‘biodiversity hotspots’. Which are both biologically rich and under severe threat from development and pollution. Though these places represent just 2.5% of Earth’s land area they support 43% of bird, mammal, reptile and amphibian species as endemics, which means they live nowhere else.
15 Φεβ 2021 · We demonstrate that climate variability in space and time has helped to shape the diversity of biodiversity hotspots and contend that fine-scale spatio-temporal modelling of biodiversity hotspots is needed to attain a better understanding of the full capacity of these systems to respond.
10 Ιαν 2024 · We build on a history of efforts to define global biodiversity hotspots 23 by adding two important new considerations: the diverse contributions of nature to people and potential conflicts...
