We ended up ditching Google Places for Algolia Places, which had great dev experience but unfortunately, it is shutting down. Their closes alternative is perhaps Mapbox, which if used judiciously, can be free. I enquired at Algolia Places if they can atleast open-source the parsed data from OSM but there are no plans for it.
