Fitness monitors usually use a default stride length to estimate distance, with each step assumed to be 2.2 feet (26 inches) for women and 2.5 feet (30 inches) for men.
To calculate your step length, simply enter your height in centimeters and a stride factor. The stride factor can vary with the standard being 0.415 for men and 0.413 for women.
Dividing your steps by 1,320 gives you a good estimate of distance if your stride length is average -- about 76 cm. If your stride is much longer or shorter than average, try measuring the distance you travel in 10 steps in centimeters, then divide that number by 10.
