At the time, graffiti was often seen as a form of rebellion and a way for marginalized communities to claim their space in a rapidly changing urban environment.
During the 1980s, street and graffiti art found their way into art galleries and museums, at a time when artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat from the New York street art scene gave credibility to such realm and took their works from the street into the fine art world.

It can be understood as antisocial behavior or as an expressive art form. Graffiti has had a long history, but became closely associated with gang activity in the 20th century.
