The 325-acre Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve backs onto the Vedder river and houses abundant habitat for wildlife including forests, marsh and swamp wetland systems, and cool water streams. A multitude of wildlife, including several species at risk, call the nature reserve home.
The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a beautiful wetland site located along the Vedder River. Managed by the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society, the site is known for one of the largest breeding colonies of the Great Blue Herons in BC as well as a wide variety of wildlife.
Formerly the Department of National Defense's ‘Wet Gap Training Area’, the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is 130 hectare site managed by the City of Chilliwack. The un-dyked floodplain habitat is home to over ninety Great Blue Heron nests and a wide variety of rare wildlife and vegetation.
In British Columbia, the Great Blue Heron, its nests and eggs are protected year-round from hunting and other forms of human persecution. On the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, land is carefully managed throughout the year to provide suitable foraging and nesting conditions.
City of Chilliwack & Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society. Leashed dogs, bicycles, and horses are permitted on Center and Vedder Trails. All other trails are pedestrian only. No camping or fires. No motorized vehicles. Parking, toilets, boardwalks, viewing blinds, lookout tower, benches, interpretive signs and maps of area.
The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a great spot in Chilliwack to see birds and other wildlife. It's also a nice place for leisurely walks.
