Great white herons are a white color-phase of great blue herons and are only found in the Florida Keys. The refuge was created to protect great white herons from extinction since the population was decimated by the demand for feathered hats.
These islands are a haven for a wide array of wildlife, from nesting sea turtles to bald eagles. Many of these keys have been designated part of the National Wilderness System. It is home to the largest heron species, the majestic great white heron, unique to south Florida and the Florida Keys.
