The Greek and Roman galleries at the Met rival the greatest collections of art from the Ancient World anywhere on earth. Works two, three or even six thousand years old are among the oldest in the museum. But age alone does not make these works worthy of study.
The Greek and Roman Study Collection contains some 3,500 objects, extending from the Neolithic period in the Aegean (sixth millennium B.C.) to the end of antiquity in the Mediterranean world (early seventh century A.D.). The objects are arranged largely in chronological order and often by material.
The opening of the New Greek and Roman Galleries on April 20, 2007—the culmination of a 15-year project—put on view more than 6,000 works from the exceptional collections of the Metropolitan Museum for future generations to study and enjoy.
