All persons living within the Greek territory shall enjoy full protection of their life, honour and liberty irrespective of nationality, race or language and of religious or political beliefs. Exceptions shall be permitted only in cases provided by international law.
Throughout the past 45 years since its enactment, the Constitution of 1975 has been revised four times. The first of those revisions, which took place in the year 1986, focused on the institution of the President of the Re-public, whose competences were curtailed by the govern-mental majority then in power.

Article 1 [Parliamentary Democracy] Greece is a Parliamentary Democracy with a President as Head of State. Popular sovereignty is the foundation on which the form of government rests. All powers are derived from the People, exist for the benefit of the People and the Nation, and are exercised in the manner determined by the Constitution.
During these years the Constitution of 1975 witnessed three revisions. The first (in 1986), which took place eleven years after its entry into force, was limited, as it focused on the institution of the President of the Republic, whose powers as a regulator of government it significantly limited.
