Throughout the past 45 years since its enactment, the Constitution of 1975 has been revised four times. The first of those revisions, which took place in the year 1986, focused on the institution of the President of the Re-public, whose competences were curtailed by the govern-mental majority then in power.

Basic Provisions. SECTION I. The Form of Government. Article 1. The form of government of Greece is that of a parliamentary republic. Popular sovereignty is the foundation of government. All powers derive from the People and exist for the People and the Nation; they shall be exercised as specified by the Constitution. Article 2.
1. Respect and protection of the value of the human being constitute the primary obligations of the State. 2. Greece, adhering to the generally recognised rules of international law, pursues the strengthening of peace and of justice, and the fostering of friendly relations between peoples and States.
The Constitution consists of 120 articles, in four parts: The first part (articles 1–3), Basic Provisions, establishes Greece as a presidential parliamentary democracy (or republic – the Greek δημοκρατία can be translated both ways), and confirms the prevalence of the Orthodox Church in Greece.
Fundamental Provisions. Section I: Form of Government. Article 1 [Parliamentary Democracy] Greece is a Parliamentary Democracy with a President as Head of State. Popular sovereignty is the foundation on which the form of government rests.
Three years have already elapsed from this second revision, and in a few months the Parliament will celebrate the first thirty years of the life of the Constitution, with an exhibition meant to underpin the constitutional and political history of modern Greece.
