This was a long-striding Mogul design built by a small, but well-known Massachusetts firm; they were the very last locomotives to emerge from that shop. All six were retained by the Boston & Maine, although the last one was converted to an 0-6-0 switcher with 17" diameter cylinders in 1897.
A set of medium-power Moguls entered service in the late 1890s; these were enlargements of the 1891 2-6-0s. The 1900 engines had boilers pressed to 180 psi. They served the GRR for more than 20 years.
