I've taken less than 10 greyhound buses in the USA but I've never had any problems with them. More comfortable that average PT I've taken in south America for sure and maybe above average in comfort for European (not counting distance trains) PT standards.

Greyhound is the largest US bus company so a lot really depends on your city / route. In rural areas, it tends to attract those without driver's licenses or money. Often poorer people, those with drug or alcohol problems, or those recently released from prison.
