Six participants were recruited via convenience sampling to be interviewed on their experience of guilt tripping someone and being a victim of a guilt trip. Thematic analysis established a definition of a guilt trip and types of guilt trip (“tongue and cheek”, moral education, and side effect).

For example, people can be more lenient towards wrongdoers who display guilt than towards those who do not.
