Knowing the exact location of currents such as the Gulf Stream and its associated warm and cold eddies is important information that can, in turn, be used in hurricane strength forecast models. RTOFS produces nowcasts and forecasts of sea levels, ocean currents, temperatures and salinity.
The Loop Current and the associated eddies at its edge played a critical role in the spreading of oil at the surface of the Gulf during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. AOML/PhOD has been at the frontline during that event to monitor and analyze ocean observations at the time.
23 Σεπ 2021 · The Gulf of Mexico loop current brings warm Caribbean water northward between the Yucatan Peninsula and Cuba and into the Gulf. The current loops around the Gulf, flows southeastward into the Florida Strait where it serves as a parent to the Florida current and ultimately joins the Gulf Stream.

Scientists monitoring the US oil spill with ESA’s Envisat radar satellite say that it has entered the Loop Current, a powerful conveyor belt that flows clockwise around the Gulf of Mexico towards Florida.
