Examining the contents of the archive from 1994 to 2000, this thesis posits that Radio Haiti-Inter provided a democratic space for people’s participation in politics at a time where these populations were excluded from public discourse at the national and international level.
The Radio Haiti Archive, housed in the Human Rights Archive at Duke University’s David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library, will be an invaluable resource for scholars, educators, and members of the public interested in twentieth-century Haitian politics, society, and culture.
The Radio Haiti Archive includes more than 5,300 separate recordings on more than 3,600 tapes, including open reel and cassette, in Haitian Creole and French. The recordings include daily coverage of events, cultural programs, political analysis, and discussions of Haiti’s recent history.
Radio Haiti-Inter was the first independent radio station in Haiti. The station was notable for its use of the Haitian Creole language, spoken by most Haitians, while most other media broadcast in French, and also for its broadcasting of international and local news.
