A clue scroll (beginner) is a random drop from a large variety of lower-levelled monsters and certain skilling activities. It is the only clue type available in free-to-play and, if skilling, can be found when fishing (clue bottle), mining (clue geode), or woodcutting (clue nest).
There are six levels of clue scroll: A beginner clue is a very low difficulty treasure trail available to free-to-play players. An easy clue is a low difficulty treasure trail, with a low reward yield. A medium clue scroll is a medium difficulty treasure trail with a more substantial reward yield.

Beginner clue scrolls can be between one and three steps long with few or no quest requirements. In order to complete steps from Charlie the Tramp , beginner clues also require Iron ore , Iron dagger , Raw herring , Raw trout , Trout , Pike , Leather body or Leather chaps .
Beginner clue scrolls are the easiest to obtain and complete, and offer lower rewards in return. Additionally, beginner clue scrolls are the only level of clue scrolls that can be obtained by free-to-play players.
