Hail Mary. — The Hail Mary (sometimes called the “Angelical salutation”, sometimes, from the first words of its Latin form, the “Ave Maria”) is the most familiar of all the prayers used by the Universal Church in honor of our Blessed Lady. It is commonly described as consisting of three parts.
Holy Mary, mother of God. We begin the second part of the Hail Mary extolling its sanctity and the great reason for its dignity. The bearer of God is holy. She believed in the Word of the Lord and gave herself as the slave of the Lord, and thanks to that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
It’s not just a recitation but a pathway into the mysteries of the faith, a simple yet deep way to honor Mary and, through her, to adore her Son. Indeed, as the Catechism reminds us, the Hail Mary is a Christological prayer. It’s about Jesus through Mary (CCC 2677).
The Hail Mary prayer is separated into two main parts: Recognizing Mary as the sinless mother of Jesus, the one who gave birth to our Savior, and played a role in our salvation. Asking Blessed Mary to pray for us “now and at the hour of our death,” and to be our intercessor before her son.
It is a sweet word, the most tender and endearing for a Christian. Mary means: "Lady", "Beauty", "Star of the sea", with everything that means "Star": guide, shelter, refuge, hope, consolation, help. Maria is Star. As the Star guides the navigator to the port, Mary leads us to heaven.
