Halfdan Ragnarsson (Old Norse: Hálfdan; Old English: Halfdene or Healfdene; Old Irish: Albann; died 877) was a Viking leader and a commander of the Great Heathen Army which invaded the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England, starting in 865.

Halfdan was in reality Harald Finehair's father and his name was Halfdan Gudrødsson, but he was nicknamed the black because of his black hair. I have no idea if the show intended him to be another of Ragnar's sons.
Ivar leaves England afterwards and dies in Ireland as mentioned in the series, Ubba and Halfdan will avenge him and Halfdan dies too. In the third book one of the antagonists is Ivarr Ivarsson, Boneless's, but he was also cut in the series (should appear in the second season)

Halfdan probably only died because he was literally on top of the device. The other knights and the churls would have suffered for a long time if it wasn't disabled.
Halfdan is seen raiding a small Frankish farm in Death All 'Round with Harald and several other warriors. When the brothers discover the hiding family living on the farm, they raped and slaughtered them, then burnt it to the ground.
