Created in 1934 by Arthur W. Braaten, W2BSR, the R-S-T- system we use today in ham radio lives on and is used daily by thousands of ham radio operators. It was designed to give operators a standard for reporting how a signal is transmitted or received.
Readability, Signal strength and Tone (RST) reports are an important part of Amateur Radio. They are two or three-digit codes read over the air which indicate how clear, strong and pure your signal is.

Ham radio operators use the RST code whenever they communicate with each other. However, a competition’s pressure for speed influences its use. Modern ham radio contestants using Morse code often abbreviate the “nines” in the RST to “Ns,” like “5NN.”
