This shaped the face of central Hamburg, as it is now made up of two lakes called the Außenalster (Outer Alster) and the Binnenalster (Inner Alster). From its spring outside of Hamburg, the Alster flows into the Elbe river just south of the city centre.
Außenalster (pronounced [ˈaʊsn̩ˌʔalstɐ] ⓘ) or Outer Alster Lake is the larger one of two artificial lakes, which are formed by the Alster River and are both located within the city limits of Hamburg, Germany.
For Hamburg's inner city, the river is a major geographical feature and greatly defines its cityscape. Through ponding of the river in the 13th century, two artificial lakes, the Außenalster (Outer Alster) and the smaller Binnenalster (Inner Alster) were created in central Hamburg.
Follow Hamburg's second biggest river up to the Alster lakes. Walk along canals, see the city's beautiful skyline and rest at a cosy café.
Located near the Rathaus, the three Alster Lakes are a central part of Hamburg life. There is a promenade where you can relax and enjoy the views and a park around the lake where you can relax. There is a fountain in the middle of one of the lakes. You can also take a cruise around the lake or rent a boat and go out on your own.
This is a beautiful part of the city with large lakes (actually part of the river) providing reflections from the walking paths around it. There are views of art pieces, buildings, and access to shops and restaurants. It’s a great place for an evening stroll.
